James Hughes-Hallet
Bio: Jim grew up in Glasgow Scotland and attended the University of Edinburgh. During his degree he studied selective mediators of Horizontal Gene Transfer in bacteria and spent some time at the U of A examining a novel snake fungus with Dr Marc Orbach. He also worked in Colorado as a whitewater rafting guide and instructor. For his PhD work he joined the Capaldi lab where he is working to build a model of the core cell growth network in budding yeast using DNA microarrays and by examining interactions using more traditional biochemical approaches. Outside of the lab he continues to peruse his love of the outdoors though hiking and rafting.
Favorites things about Tucson: Tucson is Tucson, it takes a while to know what that means, the city provides excellent access to outdoor pursuits and is a great staging post for expeditions further afield. The program is very flexible in terms of study - outside/secondary interests can be accommodated - and in time frame relative to others I have seen. The people are also easier-going and more collaborative by nature.
