Effect of Mutations Defective in receiving or processing the hermaphrodite spermiogenesis initiation signal: unmated hermaphrodites are self-sterile because their spermatids fail to undergo spermiogenesis; mated hermaphrodites are self- and outcross-fertile. Males are fertile. Spermatids from both males and hermaphrodites form spikes rather than pseudopods when exposed to pronase. Suppressible by spe-6 suppressor alleles.
