This fall, each department in the University of Arizona's College of Science nominated an outstanding senior who went above and beyond during their time as a Wildcat. The MCB Department is pleased to share our outstanding senior Ms. Sofia Ragonese's story as she reflects on her time at UArizona and her amazing experience at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology!
Background and Inspiration:
Originally from Moscow, Russia, Sofia's passion for molecular and cellular biology was ignited during her high school days. Her journey commenced with researching bacteria that metabolize plastic at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, eventually leading her to an expedition in the Arctic Circle. Sofia's experiences convinced her that biology knows no boundaries, allowing her to explore and be curious anywhere in the world. What captivated her most about research was its unique combination of creativity and logic.
Favorite Classes and Research Projects:
Sofia highlights her enjoyment of the MCB 425 cancer discoveries class, where she delved into research papers to develop her literature review and paper-reading skills. She also found fulfillment in the MCB 397A Outreach Development course, which challenged her to communicate complex concepts to middle schoolers in an accessible manner. However, the pinnacle of her academic journey was the nearly three years spent in Koenraad Van Doorslaer’s laboratory, studying the lifecycle of Human Papillomavirus. The diverse and innovative nature of each project left a lasting impact on Sofia.
Cherished Memories at UA:
Despite spending only two years at the University of Arizona after transferring from Pima Community College, Sofia has amassed numerous cherished memories. Overcoming the fear of not being "smart enough" for research or a degree in a foreign language stands out as a significant milestone. Joining the Koenraad Van Doorslaer’s lab and collaborating with Dr. Rob Jackson shaped Sofia's identity as a scientist and solidified her major choice. Beyond academia, she built vital friendships that have been crucial to her personal and professional growth.
Future Aspirations:
As Sofia approaches graduation, her next steps involve working as a research assistant for a few years before pursuing a Ph.D. Her overarching professional goal revolves around contributing to science and educating the next generation of talented specialists. Sofia sees herself making meaningful contributions to academic research, emphasizing her dedication to both scientific advancement and the nurturing of future scientific minds.
